There are still important challenges that need to be overcome before the vision of smart and sustainable cities is fully optimising. These include increasing energy consumption, deepening social and economic inequality, unsustainable consumption/production patterns, traffic congestion, increasing urban poverty, climate risks, air pollution, loss of biodiversity and more. We are at a point when we are called to #collaborate and cooperate to face these challenges"

Financing Sustainable Development Goals

As two thirds of the buildings that will make up the world's fastest growing cites by 2050 are yet to be built, it is now our chance to change the future. According to New Climate Economy, urban areas in sub-Saharan Africa will be home to 800 million more people in 2050 than 2014. All these people will live, work and study in buildings. The future growth in Africa represents a tremendous opportunity for stakeholders to reinvent the way we build - to benefit the economy, society and enable humanity an nature to thrive together.

Getting it right with cities has a significant potential, not just from a pure economic perspective but also from a social and environmental perspective. Getting it wrong is likely to be very costly economically, socially and environmentally.

The Kenya Green Building Society (KGBS) has taken the lead to transform building practices in Kenya to a sustainable future; promoting a healthy and sustainable environment for the nation. The 2017 theme, Financing Sustainable Development Goals, targets the heart of sustainable development in Africa:

  • What do developers, private and public, need to do to access sustainable incentivized financing in 2017?

  • Which finances are available to achieve sustainable development goals in green buildings?

  • Can we reinvent green buildings? Are we doing enough to mitigate climate change through green buildings?

  • How can the region manifest a macro and micro green economy?

  • Have we exhausted opportunities for sustainable affordable housing in Africa?

  • How can we amplify green building education and vocational training for capacity building?
